Wearable works of art
John Galliano’s creative genius is in full effect with the new Maison Margiela Artisanal Spring/Summer 2017 Collection—every look brings a fresh surprise as Galliano reinvents and deconstructs the idea of each garment. Art plays a central theme, seen in cubist overlays, painterly motifs and in the most memorable look of the collection, a shadowy portrait by artist Benjamin Shine composed entirely out of black tulle that floats over a white coat dress. The theme of layers of identity in the digital age is at play here, too, seen in masks, facial overlays and layering fabrics. To describe the collection, Maison Margiela said, “Infused with references to communication to the online age, motifs appear through layering of fabrics while volumes and shades cast the house’s iconic codes through a digital filter.” You can see the entire ingenius Maison Margiela Artisanal Spring/Summer 2017 Collection in the video, above.
