“I always felt like a voyeur doing this project,” said French photographer Sophie Ebrard of It’s Just Love, her photo series which finds beauty behind the scenes of films directed by a popular British porn director known as Gazzman. How did Ebrard get caught up in such an artistic mission? “A year into being in the photography world, I started to feel the need to push my boundaries and explore the human body,” she says. “Most of my pictures were of friends and family and that felt too safe. I wanted to do a project that involved nudity and sex.” To accomplish that goal, Ebrard decided to go to a swingers party to try to meet potential models to photograph. “That night was a real eye opener for me as I got to witness people having sex right in front of my eyes,” she recalls. “I just found it fascinating and really beautiful.” It was at that party that Ebrard met Gazzman, who invited her to visit the set of one of his movies to take photographs. “I followed Gazzman for four years on various locations around the world,” she says. “It always takes time to get used to being on a porn set, but then it becomes very normal very quickly. You get used to seeing people—sometimes multiple people—having sex in front of you. And after spending so much time with the actors off camera, you realize they are just normal people with families and friends, and hobbies outside of work.” Ebrard’s photographs capture the camaraderie and playfulness—and sometimes even the sheer boredom—that are part of everyday life on a porn set. “I meant for people to feel at ease when looking at the work,” she says. “And I want people experiencing a bit of me at the same time.”
