An eye on The Horizontal

A group show at Cheim & Read explores minimalist expression

BY: Jes Zurell

Strip down any view of the horizon to its barest element and what’s left is a horizontal line. Such raw, bare imagery is the subject of The Horizontal, a new group exhibition at Cheim & Read NYC, where 21 intergenerational master and emerging artists explore the nuances of minimalist expression.

A quotation from Agnes Martin inspired the show: “Anyone who can sit on a stone in a field awhile can see my painting. Nature is like parting a curtain you go into … as you would cross an empty beach to look at the ocean.”

Each piece captures the type of simplicity often hammered beneath the daily clamor of mobile devices, traffic, and schedules. The works are clean, but not sterile, tempered without falling flat.

We’ve curated a collection of some of our favorite pieces from the show below.
