Sexy Hyperreal Sculpture
Carole A. Feuerman’s graceful goddesses in two recent shows

Carole A. Feuerman came to prominence at a time when women artists were just beginning to build momentum in the art world, in the 1980s and ’90s. Today she continues to create hyper-realistic sculpture in the tradition made famous by John De Andrea and the late Duane Hanson, but unlike the work of her male peers, who specialize in quotidian and unglamorous figures, Feuerman luxuriates in her models’ grace and beauty—and their triumphant spirit.
Two solo exhibitions of her work were recently on view. >C24 Gallery in New York presented “Carole A. Feuerman: Hero and Leander,” featuring a wide selection of new sculpture (and paintings), including Leda and the Swan and DurgaMa, pictured below. And the Museum of Art — Deland, Florida, put together “Carole Feuerman: A Body of Work,” featuring Birth / Geyser (below), Monumental Brooke With Beach Ball + Video Projection (on the home page) and a dozen other sculptures from the last five years. PROVOKR celebrates the chance to observe Feuerman’s glorious figures up close.
