Charlie Hewitt
At Jim Kempner Fine Art in New York

For the paintings in his ninth solo show with Jim Kempner Fine Art in New York, “Charlie Hewitt: New Paintings, Sculpture & Ceramics,” recently completed, Hewitt focused less on brushwork and used an array of tools, such as sponges, paint scrapers, china bristle brushes and extruders. He began by collaging prints and paper to canvas. “I put together a body of work that shows the range of my interests in materials,” Hewitt says. “I love to interchange mediums and let each material inform the other, through imagery and the tools used to create them. I’m trying to reach for a language that expresses my personal narrative and at the same time works on an emotional level.” Hewitt’s artwork is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; and the Portland Museum of Art, in Portland, Maine; among others. He lives and works in Portland, Maine, and Jersey City, New Jersey.
