Modern Art from the Middle East

Amazing work at the Yale Art Gallery

BY: PROVOKR Staff

The Yale Art Gallery presents a selection of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by important Middle East artists rarely exhibited in the United States. The artwork on display is from the Barjeel Art Foundation, an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art located in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates. The collection at Yale presents artworks from Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria and dates from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.

“The artists in this show engage with issues of nationalism and modernity, abstraction and figuration, and the ways in which cultural production impacts everyday life,” explains Kishwar Rizvi co-curator of the exhibition.”Their work provides an important resource for understanding the complex social and historical factors that defined the Middle East in the 20th century.

It is an exciting curation for us to see great art rarely seen and dually to experience more fully that time through the work of these artists.
