Tracey Emin Nudes
Paintings and prints from Lehmann Maupin and Carolina Nitsch

British artist Tracey Emin takes a sexually provocative stance to her work, as a way of locating it within a feminist tradition—the personal as political. We are quite taken with the spareness and raw sensuousness of the paintings and prints that were recently exhibited at two galleries in Chelsea, New York.
At Lehmann Maupin there were several paintings on paper and canvas, including You were here like the ground underneath my feet (2016), on our home page/Art page. It’s acrylic on canvas, 60.24 x 83.86 inches (©Tracey Emin; courtesy of Lehmann Maupin). At Carolina Nitsch there were a series of prints, including And I Love You (2015), above. It’s a monotype on Somerset paper; signed, dated, titled; 26.5 x 36.75 inches (courtesy of Carolina Nitsch).
Emin says her work is inspired by Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele. Filter that through an worldview of female empowerment, and you have a potent, fascinating mix!
