As a designer, Alexander McQueen (1969–2010) was known for pushing fashion’s limits to unknown extremes, and for presenting shows that had equal measures of shock, surprise, emotional power and raw energy in them. “People don’t want to see clothes,” McQueen said, “they want to see something that fuels the imagination.” He brought drama and extravagance to the catwalk, and his designs displayed contrasting elements of fragility and strength, tradition and modernity, and fluidity and severity. His collections combined an in-depth working knowledge of British tailoring, the fine workmanship of a French haute couture atelier, and impeccable Italian finishing. Such was his impact on the fashion world that years after his death he is still considered a legend and his designs continue to live on. Here are PROVOKR’s picks of his five coolest runway shows, above and below. “When I’m dead and gone,” he said, “people will know that the 21st century was started by Alexander McQueen.”
