Au Chic Givenchy
A Tribute In Photos to Hubert de Givenchy

Renowned French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy passed away at 91 recently. PROVOKR wanted to honor him in our own way with photos of some of our favorite Givenchy looks.
The House of Givenchy designer created some of the most well-known and well-documented dresses of our century. Most well-known is the little black dress that Audrey Hepburn so notoriously paired with pearls as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961).
After a chance meeting in France in 1953, Hepburn became Givenchy’s most-beloved muse, with the designer creating iconic look after icon look for the petite actress. She wore Givenchy in countless films and glamorous events. “He is far more than a couturier,” Hepburn said of Givenchy. “He is a creator of personality.”
Jacqueline Kennedy was also a notable client of the designer. He famously created the floral-embroidered gown she wore in 1961 when she visited Versailles. Givenchy actually made 15 pieces for Kennedy’s first trip to France as First Lady. Because it was frowned upon for the First Lady to not be wearing an American designer, Kennedy and Givenchy agreed to keep the collaboration quiet. “She was very modern, very elegant, she loved fashion, she loved our clothes, but we had to be discreet,” he said.
Givenchy’s designs remain classic to this day. Several actresses have graced the red carpet in his beautiful fashions. Diane Kruger, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, and Julianne Moore, just to name a few, have all worn his gowns.
While the legendary designer may be gone, his reputation as one of the greats will surely live on through his timeless work.
