The marriage between fashion and photography has produced some of the most iconic moments ever to be captured on film. Examples include, Barry Lategan’s 1966 closeup of Twiggy; Brooke Shields’ 1980 Calvin Klein campaign; Peter Lindbergh’s “Birth of the Supermodels” in 1988; and Anna Nicole Smith’s 1992 Guess ad (sorry not sorry). These photos gave their audience something they had never seen before and also made huge names of the people who took them. Leibowitz, Meisel, Demarchelier, Avedon…they all had an eye for capturing fashion that made us stop and look and these latest London-based up-and-coming names in fashion photography are on the verge of creating their very own defining moments.

PAUL PETER

As a nominee to the 2018 British Fashion Awards in the New Wave Creatives category, Paul Peter was doing just that: making waves. He had already been listed by Hunger magazine as one of 2018’s “5 emerging fashion photographers you need to follow.” He’s been published in numerous other magazines like Attitude, Wonderland, and Rollacoaster and he counts Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter as clients. Go to his website (paulpeter.co.uk) and check out his limited edition work Cut/Throat (some of which we’ve included here), which aims to literally penetrate the surface of fashion photography by scarring or scratching the photographs. This commentary on the cut-throat nature of fashion is an unexpected but welcome addition to the fashion world and so is Paul Peter’s rise.

LUCA ANZALONE

With an array of work across genres, Luca Anzalone has created amazing images beyond the world of photography, including sculptures, installations and drawings. His work has a rather theatrical element to it, with a penchant for texture and light that brings his photographs to life (props, fabric, food…you name it, Anzalone has probably used it to interact with his subjects). This performative (and somewhat dreamy) aspect to his work has led to editorial shoots with Vogue Italia and Dazed & Confused. Anzalone’s penchant for capturing surreal imagery and making it all seem strangely normal has us hooked and at just 24 years old, he’ll have us hooked for awhile.

STELLA MORAIS

Brazillian visual artist Stella Morais is another Londoner making waves in the fashion photography world. Like Paul Peter, she made her presence known in Hunger and Wonderland and has some pretty high-profile clients including Topshop and L’Oreal. Her specialty is portraiture and capturing natural, simple beauty in her photographs. Ever since she received her first Polaroid camera from her dad when she was 8, her photography and knack for finding the raw beauty in her subjects have only gotten better.

AMBER GRACE DIXON

Amber Grace Dixon’s photography aims to capture and evoke emotions by breaking through the barrier that lies between the subject and the observer. She prefers to reveal something personal by capturing her subjects’ inner moods, personality and atmosphere. Check out her 2014 project for Vice, which depicts two male teens exploring an abandoned house. It’s meant to evoke the viewer’s exploratory instinct and it just makes us want to explore more of her work.

THEO WILLIAMS

Theo Williams was named Young Fashion Photographer of the Year in 2014, and he’s continued to blaze his own trail since. Some highlights of his work include 2018’s stunning fashion shoot entitled 5am for the Sticks and Stones Agency and his work for Winchester Fashion Week back in 2012, which put him on the map (he was barely 16 at the time). His mastery of lighting and exquisite black & white shots captures a real sense of scene, as well as our attention.

THURSTON REDDING
