1.Castello Cavalcanti
In a quiet Italian village in 1955, American Formula One driver Jed Cavalcanti, in last place in a race through the Italian countryside, crashes his car in the middle of a public square. He then abandons his car and shares drinks with the locals as he waits for the next bus out of town. He soon discovers that he’s in his ancestral homeland and that several members of his company are his “ancestors.” Cavalcanti then cancels his plans and decides to stay in town for awhile.
2. The Tale of Thomas Burberry
To celebrate the brand’s 160th anniversary, director Asif Kapadia conjured up a brief Thomas Burberry biopic. Domhnall Gleeson plays the eponymous designer, and Sienna Miller plays Sara, a fictionalized version of his first love. Although not historically accurate (it doesn’t try to be), the film does highlight Burberry’s accomplishments, from creating uniforms for British soldiers during World War I to perfecting the trench coat for generations to come.
3. Words Matter
For Coach’s short film “Words Matter,” the brand brought together two of Hollywood’s biggest names: director Spike Lee and Michael B. Jordan (the current global face of Coach menswear). The film shows Jordan motorcycling through the desert while seeing rocks emblazoned with words such as “Hatred” and “Bigotry.” Jordan then decides to replace these stones with stones of his own that say things like “Courage” and “Love.” Lee and Jordan hand picked the words that were shown, which helped to reinforce the values that Coach stands for.
4. Cabiria, Charity, and Chastity
An ode to Fellini’s “Nights of Calabria,” Natasha Lyonne’s directorial debut features Chastity, a woman who reconnects with her Vaudevillian past and finds eloquence and meaning in an absurd world. This incredible piece of art also features the likes of Fred Armisen and Macaulay Culkin.
5. I Want Your Love
“Walk, walk fashion baby!” In Tom Ford’s “I Want Your Love,” Lady Gaga covered the Chic classic, and also appeared in the video strutting down the runway with the likes of Lucky Blue Smith and Mica. This raucous slice of fun was shot by Nick Knight for Ford’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection.
6. Gucci and Beyond
Shot by Glen Luchford and depicting classic sci-fi influences from the 50s and 60s, “Gucci and Beyond” literally put Gucci back on the map for many fashion snobs who had long since turned their backs on the brand. Familiar sci-fi faces like Robby the Robot from “Forbidden Planet” and The Creature from “The Black Lagoon” make cameos, making this short film a genius love letter to current geek culture and once-popular sci-fi culture.
7. Lee Alexander McQueen, 1969-2010
It goes without saying that Alexander McQueen left a lasting legacy. Longtime McQueen collaborator Nick Knight only furthered this legacy with this short film that he put together for his ShowStudio website. Using his own archive, as well as unseen footage from his previous McQueen film (“To Lee, With Love, Nick”), Knight worked with filmmaker Younji Ku and art director Jon Emmony to enhance some of McQueen’s most memorable looks with cutting edge 3-D animation.
