Gianni, We Love You!

A celebration of Versace's genius, S/S 2018

Back in 1991, Gianni Versace made history with his fierce, fabulous Fall 1991 runway show by hiring the hottest Supermodels in the world: Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington (we hear it cost him $25,000 a girl). As the gorgeous women strutted down the catwalk, they mouthed the lyrics to the George Michael song “Freedom! ’90,” a nod to the music video they all starred in.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of his death, his sister Donatella Versace, presented the runway show of the season at Milan Fashion Week, 2017. The over-the-top collection was perfectly in line with Versace’s most esteemed and beloved clothing from the late 80s and early 90s. Accompanied by a sentimental tribute from Donatella to her brother, the current hottest models appeared wearing the sexy, skintight clothing inspired by the genius of Gianni.

As always, the Versace fabrics are to die for. Fun, Pop Art Warhol prints of Marilyn Monroe, the rich, iconic gold and black baroque patterns, the delightful butterflies, all constructed into body-loving silhouettes that look amazing on the strong, curvaceous women wearing them. For this show, Donatella got only the best walkers: the Hadid sisters, Bella and Gigi, Kendall Jenner, Mariacarla Boscono, and in a lovely full-circle moment, Kaia Gerber made her Versace debut. Kaia’s mother, of course, is Cindy Crawford.

In an homage to Versace Fall 1991 (see the video below), Donatella invited the same supermodels, to walk out for the finale with her. To the absolute delight of the fans lucky enough to get a ticket, Gianni’s baby sister walked the runway with Cindy, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, and former first lady of France, Carla Bruni. It was a sight to behold. Long live Versace!
