JEREMY SCOTT’S MOSCHINO FILM

A Perfect Homage To The 1939 Film "The Women"

For Moschino’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection, the house took new inspiration from Old Hollywood glamour.

Dubbed “Jungle Red,” the short film for Moschino’s latest collection pays homage to George Cukor’s classic 1939 film “The Women.”  Cukor’s movie is completely devoid of men (a rarity for the time, although “The Women” still wouldn’t pass the Bechdel test), and Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott couldn’t have been more timely in his decision to use this as his Fall/Winter 2021 springboard.  “The Women” pivots from black & white to technicolor right before a fashion show (for seemingly no other reason than to flex the Technicolor technology of the time), and this is the specific scene in the movie to which Scott pays tribute in “Jungle Red” (which itself is a nod to the specific shade of lipstick worn by the ladies in Cukor’s film).

We are taken through several vignettes by our host, played by the legendary Maye Musk (yes, Elon Musk’s mother), who takes us through a day in the life of a modern lady through several states of dress.  Presented in five parts, “Jungle Red” first transitions from Manhattan’s skyline and professional business gals to the pastoral countryside.  Here, we see said countryside literally printed onto the garments, with pasture giving way to bright blue sky and fluffy clouds.  Many of the looks here aren’t the most commercial and will probably be show-only or exclusively special order (which Moschino is prone to do), but the clouds-and-sky-printed high heels are must-haves.  We are then taken to a night at the museum, where arguably the three strongest ready-to-wear looks in the collection are gathered around a painting (which itself comes to life).  After the museum visit transitions into a shopping safari complete with animal-inspired fashions, some even with tails, we reach the dazzling finale – a theater setting where evening looks are featured.  This time around, Moschino’s gowns and accompanying accessories (the coinpurse gloves are to die!) are their usual fun selves, but there’s a high glamour here in addition to the camp that we don’t usually get to see from Scott.

As Moschino’s first fashion film, “Jungle Red” delivers precisely what Moschino is known for – whimsy, a sense of humor, an almost cartoonish level of wow factor, and of course, luxury.  The film is also packed with famous faces, such as Moschino regulars Winnie Harlow, Joan Smalls, Lily Aldridge, Miranda Kerr, and Hailey Bieber.  However, the house never fails to surprise us, and this time around was no exception.  We were delightfully surprised to get cameos from Amber Valletta, Karen Elson, Shalom Harlow, Carolyn Murphy, and sensation-of-the-moment Precious Lee.  Closing out the show is none other than Dita von Teese wearing a gown with a wait-for-it moment that is pure, unadulterated Moschino.

Check out “Jungle Red” while you’re here, and not just once.  There’s something different to catch upon each and every viewing.  Time after time, Moschino continues to prove that it can be a heavy fashion hitter while still knowing how to have fun.  More importantly, “Jungle Red” proves that all women, regardless of age (Maye Musk is seventy-friggin-two), race, or size, can be fun and fabulous.
