Art Directing, Styling, Shooting Her Own Photographs
Is there anything this girl can’t do?
For her most recent Vogue Italia cover shoot, Rihanna took total creative control, both styling and shooting it herself. She wowed in a sheer Valentino gown in what the magazine called the “Rihanna by Rihanna” issue. Even more amazing is the fact that this is the first time the magazine has handed complete creative control of the cover shoot to the subject herself.
Rihanna, also the project director for the shoot (yes, this shoot was completely DIY), captioned the photo “the do it yourself” issue. In another image, she rocks a sheer top and chunky platform heels with a choppy green pixie hair style. Elsewhere, she looks ready for freezing temperatures in three pairs of pants and as many coats in a snap she dubbed “lil pressure.” In another particularly stunning image, Rihanna rocks a red negligee dripping with flowers.
She took to her social media to post the various images, tagging the creatives and brands that helped her achieve the looks, including her makeup line Fenty Beauty and lingerie line Savage x Fenty.
The magazine said of the issue, which came out June 4: “On set Rihanna played simultaneously the artist and the muse, the observer and the observed, the director and the character, experimenting on the fine line that exists between the two sides of the artist.”
Rihanna also wisely chose not to use any filters in her posts. She chose to portray herself as cleanly and naturally as possible for the DIY issue, and as you can see, she certainly didn’t need the filters anyway.
“If there was a right occasion for this new experiment, it could only have been the DIY issue,” the magazine explained. “Neither could there have been a better protagonist than Rihanna – who has appeared on so many covers, but never like this time in the version in which she, and only she, has chosen to portray herself, without filters or any mediation.”
Take a look through the images from the photo shoot, which are 100% Rihanna-created. It’s been incredible to see just what this talented artist has been able to accomplish, and after this iconic shoot, it’s clear to see that her pop culture takeover is nowhere near complete.
