THIERRY MUGLER’S FAB FILM
Hunter Schafer, Bella Hadid, Alek Wek+

As if the first half of the House of Mugler’s Spring/Summer 2021 presentation wasn’t fierce enough, designer Casey Cadwallader’s second half proved that the French house is still the master of showmanship.
Cadwallader’s “Part 2” video presentation is a perfect marriage of production, casting, and fashion. The six-and-a-half-minute show is punctuated by pulsating trap-infused house music, which pairs perfectly with the futuristic, classically-Mugler bodycon designs. In the first moments of the video presentation, we see none other than Bella Hadid being hurled through the air like a superhero by Cadwallader himself. She then lands perfectly on the runway and struts backward in curve-seamed jeans and sheer top, and the futuristic, gloriously weird show begins.
The casting of models is arguably the best part about this show, as some of the most beautiful women in the world can be seen making their way down the runway – in a variety of ways. After Hadid’s out-there intro, it becomes quite apparent that there’s a heavy emphasis on unconventional movement here (a brilliant wink to the unconventional movement of the clothes themselves). Fashion legend Alek Wek’s uncontrollable pirouetting adds to the unexpected stuntery that many of the models surprise us with during the video game-like presentation. Other iconic names appearing in the show include: Irina Shayk, Soo Joo Park, Omahyra Mota, and Pose actress Dominique Jackson.

The best performance of the show, however, goes to Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer, who leaps onto the runway and crouches like a wild animal…in heels, mind you. She then barely blinks as she becomes a live piece of art after a full tub of water is poured over her head, giving her sheer & jewel-encrusted ensemble an added 3D shine you need to see to believe.

It’s important to note the amazing degree of inclusivity here, too. Models of all shapes and sizes can be seen in this mesmerizing presentation, but it’s the transgender visibility that deserves a special shout-out. The inclusion of Schafer and Jackson, among others, is refreshing to say the least, not to mention the fact that these ladies can work a garment like nobody’s business. Also, Cadwallader’s “Part 2” video was released on March 31, which just happens to be the International Transgender Day of Visibility. Now that’s a boss move, indeed.

Be sure to watch the House of Mugler’s second half presentation for Spring/Summer 2021. You’ll get all the classic Mugler you could possibly want: futuristic, scandalous, body-celebrating, and impeccable construction. What you’ll also get this time around, though, is an appreciation for beauty in all its forms.

Who wouldn’t want to be included in that?
