Ava DuVernay‘s award-winning documentary 13th takes an in depth look at the U.S. prison system, and the way Black people are incarcerated disproportionately more than people of other races. The movie takes its name from the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for the conviction of a crime. The film explores how our prison system has used that loophole to effectively continue slavery into the 21st century. 13th was nominated for Best Documentary at the 89th Academy Awards, and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards.
