5 Scary Spring Movies
These Fright Flicks Will Keep You Up At Night
Who says horror has to be contained in the Halloween season? For audiences looking for thrills and chills all throughout the year, look no further than this listing of five hot horror films coming out this spring.
A Quiet Place
This high-concept horror thriller envisions a world in which a family must live their lives in absolute silence. Mysterious creatures inhabit the land and, as the tagline for the movie states, “if they hear you, they hunt you.” The film is co-written and directed by John Krasinski. Initially known for his role as Jim in NBC’s workplace comedy, The Office, Krasinski surprised audiences when he bulked up and kicked a ton of ass in Michael Bay‘s war thriller, 13 Hours, and he’s showing off even more of his range with A Quiet Place, which also co-stars his real-life wife, Emily Blunt. A Quiet Place hits theaters on April 6.
Hereditary
Horror fans love haunted houses. From The House on Haunted Hill to Hasu and The Amityville Horror, there’s something about a haunted house that is just evergreen for terrifying cinema. Hereditary looks to follow-up on those classics while adding a few new twists of its own. Toni Colette, Gabriel Byrne, and Milly Shapiro star in this chiller about a family who moves into a house after the family matriarch dies and leaves it to them as an inheritance… And then, naturally, horror stuff happens. Hereditary is due in theaters on June 8.
Breaking In
The “home invasion” film is a variant on the haunted house genre, but instead of other-worldly forces from within, the threat comes from an outside force, usually striving for realism over supernatural terror. Based on the trailer and synopsis, Breaking In looks like it will be equally parts terrifying and empowering, with a strong mix of gritty terror and “take it back” righteous action. Gabrielle Union stars as a mother who takes her family to her father’s house after his death, only to find herself under siege by a gang of criminals who want to steal his fortune for themselves and kill anyone who gets in their way. Thrills and action inevitably ensue. See it for yourself on May 11.
Truth or Dare
The hottest horror studio right now is Blumhouse Productions. They specialize in low-budget features which offer complete creative freedom to the filmmakers. They don’t exclusively produce horror films (their output includes the Oscar-winning Whiplash and Joe Carnahan‘s surreal actioner, Stretch) , but their most noteworthy films offer high-intensity scares with some high-concept twists. Get Out, The Purge, and Split are just a few of Blumhouse’s biggest films, and they show no signs of slowing down. Truth or Dare looks like a straightforward horror flick about a harmless game gone horribly wrong, but odds are there’s way more to the film than meets the eye. We’ll have to wait until April 13 to find out!
Bad Samaritan
Perhaps Bad Samaritan is more of a crime thriller than a horror movie, but let’s face it: any movie starring David Tennant is pretty much a horror movie by default. The man is terrifying as Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, and he’s continuing his chilling streak here. Two would-be small-time crooks are using their job as valets to burgle houses, but they get more than they bargain for when they attempt to rob Tennant‘s house and discover that he is a psychopath committing heinous crimes of his own. The film then becomes a high-octane cat and mouse game between a low-rent thug and an outright maniac. Needless to say, count us in. Bad Samaritan hits theaters on May 4.
