AVATAR 2 – YES PLEASE!
James Cameron Returns to Pandora

Who remembers what happened in the first Avatar movie? No, we don’t mean M. Night Shyamalan’s critically panned adaptation of the beloved tv series Avatar: The Last Airbender, but the James Cameron fantasy saga that came out in 2009. For a brief refresher, the film is set in 2154. Humans have depleted all of Earth’s natural resources (sounds a bit too on the nose). They are now harvesting a valuable mineral from the planet of Pandora, which has a toxic atmosphere for humans. On Pandora live the Na’vi, a species of 10-foot-tall, blue humanoids who live in harmony with nature. To enter Pandora, scientists have created avatars that humans can use. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic and former Marine, is recruited to explore the biosphere on Pandora. Once there, he meets and falls in love with Na’vi princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Jake realizes that the humans are in the wrong, and he decides to help the Na’vi fight against the encroaching people. In the end, the Na’vi are successful, and Jake decides to stay in his avatar forever as a Na’vi and marry Neytiri.

Over a decade after the first movie dropped, we got a sequel and then some more sequels. The second movie in the Avatar franchise will follow Jake and Neytiri. They are now living together on Pandora, raising their young family. However, when their old foes return to finish what they started (humans gonna human), they strike out in search of new regions on Pandora where they can be safe.
Filming on Avatar 2 started in August of 2017 and lasted for just over three years. Both Worthington and Saldana reprised their roles from the first film. The insanely star-studded cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet.

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on December 16, 2022. However, its release has been delayed eight times, so don’t be too surprised if it happens again. Three more entries are planned for the Avatar universe, slated for release in December 2024, 2026, and 2028.
