BIRDS OF PREY

Margot Robbie is a Harlequin No More

“Do you know what a harlequin is?” Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn asks at the beginning of the new trailer for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). “A harlequin’s role is to serve, it’s nothing without a master,” she continues, but this harlequin no longer has a master. No, the former psychiatrist turned Joker-lackey has split from her domineering beau and decided to strike out on her own. If you think she’ll be keeping herself out of trouble, you would be sorely mistaken. Seriously, where have you been all this time if you think Harley Quinn can stay out of trouble?

Harley Quinn isn’t going it all alone though, no, Birds of Prey sees Harley Quinn, following the events of Suicide Squad, teaming up with certified super-heroines Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl named Cassandra Cain from the clutches of crime lord Black Mask. Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn. Mary Elizabeth Winstead steps in as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell plays Black Canary, Rosie Perez takes on Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor plays the evil Black Mask. Ella Jay Basco makes her feature film debut as the young Cassandra Cain.

Birds of Prey was directed by Cathy Yan from a screenplay written by Christina Hodson. Wait, a superhero movie with an all-women superhero team, written and directed by women? Heck yes. Harley Quinn really has emancipated herself from her patriarchal former paramour. Birds of Prey is scheduled to be released on February 7, 2020 by Warner Brothers.
