BLACK WIDOW SUBSTITUTES
Movies Starring Scarlett, Florence... To Hold You Over

Marvel’s Black Widow was initially scheduled to hit theaters this month. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the release date is pushed back to November 6, 2020. Fans have waited a decade for a standalone Black Widow movie, and sadly, we have to continue to wait until year’s end. In the meantime, why don’t we watch movies with the stars of Black Widow? It may hold us over until November.
Scarlett Johansson
If you’re looking for a sci-fi action movie with Johansson, watch Lucy. This 2014 Luc Besson film follows 25-year-old Lucy (Johannson), an unwitting drug mule who ends up being dosed with a synthetic drug that gives her superpowers.
If you’re more in the mood for a sci-fi romance, check out her. Johansson stars as Samantha, an AI virtual assistant with whom the movie’s lead, Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) falls in love. Rent Lucy on Amazon, and watch her on Netflix.
Florence Pugh
Sure, we all love Florence Pugh now, but have you seen Lady Macbeth, the movie that officially launched her career? In Lady Macbeth, Pugh stars as Katherine, a young woman in a loveless marriage to a brute, who begins a steamy affair.
Or check her out in the miniseries The Little Drummer Girl, where she portrays an English actress who gets sucked into espionage. Watch Lady Macbeth on Kanopy, and watch The Little Drummer Girl on SundanceNow.
David Harbour
If it’s David Harbour you love, then why not check out Hellboy? Sure, this movie about the half-demon superhero battling the evil sorceress Nimue didn’t fare well with critics, but Harbour kicks ass.
Or, you can watch him in the brand new Netflix movie, Extraction, where he plays a former mercenary with a connection to Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler. Watch Hellboy on HBONow, and Extraction on Netflix.
Rachel Weisz
If it’s excellent queer content you’re after, check out these two movies starring Rachel Weisz. Up first is Disobedience, where she stars as a formerly Orthodox Jewish woman who returns home after her father’s death and rekindles a romance with Rachel McAdams’ Esti.
Then watch The Favourite. Weisz stars as confidante and lover to Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), who finds her position threatened by the arrival of Abigail (Emma Stone). Watch Disobedience on Amazon Prime, and The Favourite on CinemaxGO.
