Forest fires ravage the California landscape annually. Documentarian Lucy Walker focuses on the Golden State to explore what she calls the “global fire crisis.” Bring Your Own Brigade is the gripping story of California forest fires. It spotlights the work of firefighters, affected homeowners and shares first-person interviews with environmental experts.

Bring Your Own Brigade is in selected theaters beginning August 6 and streams on CBSN and Paramount+ starting on August 20. This trailer highlights the project from Oscar-nominated documentary director Lucy Walker. Multiple issues that include logging (cutting down trees in forests) cause these devastating fires. This film argues that humans are the real cause of these massive fires. Acts like logging and lumber work accelerate the speed of wildfires and invite widespread destruction in densely wooded areas. Firefighters discuss some of the most intense fires and their consequences. This documentary also asks: who is to blame for these massive forest fires: nature or man?

While exploring several solutions, Walker invites viewers to understand how California communities react to the spread of wildfires and learn about prevention. One interviewee says, “maybe we need to go back 100 years to see how [others] did it.” The issue then is the management rather than solely the prevention of forest fires. Walker wants to increase public awareness and understanding of this dangerous phenomenon.

You can learn a lot about these climate issues when you step into Walker’s world.
