The spaceship Starship Avalon, in its 120-year voyage to the Homestead Colony, is transporting 5,259 people who are hibernating in sleep chambers. As a result of an apparent malfunction, two pods open prematurely, and the two people who awake, Aurora Dunn (Jennifer Lawrence) and Jim Preston (Chris Pratt), are stranded—and aging—90 years from their destination.
