Terence Davies, the majestic filmmaker of The House of Mirth and The Deep Blue Sea, brings to the screen the novel Sunset Song, a passionate tale of a young woman’s love and endurance, set in a small Scottish village on the eve of World War I. Chris Guthrie evolves from a schoolgirl to a wife and mother to a war widow, summoning all her strength to adapt to changing times and the rough and tumble of the seasons. “It is a work of epic intimacy,” says Davies, “about the enduring presence of the land and the courage of the human spirit.” The Magnolia Pictures release opened in May.
