In Spike Lee’s new Netflix movie, Da 5 Bloods, four African American Vietnam War vets return to Vietnam in search of both their fallen squad leader and buried treasure. Upon their return, they realize that they will not only have to contend with nature, but also their own PTSD if they are going to survive.

Da 5 Bloods stars Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Norm Lewis (Scandal), Clarke Peters (The WIre), and Isiah Whitlock Jr. (BlacKkKlansman) as Paul, Eddie, Otis, and Melvin, the four vets who return to Vietnam along with Jonathan Majors (The Last Black Man in San Francisco) as Paul’s son, David. Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) plays Norman, their fallen squad leader.

The first trailer for the film was just released on May 18. The trailer opens with a shot of a helicopter flying in front of the sun and then cuts to our four vets partying in a club called Apocalypse Now. A nice little homage to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 classic, to which this will undoubtedly be compared. The trailer then cuts between footage of the film’s cast in modern-day Vietnam and actual footage from the Vietnam War era, all set to the tune of “Time Has Come Today” by the psychedelic soul band The Chamber Brothers.

Be sure to watch Da 5 Bloods when it comes out on Netflix on June 12, 2020. And until then, check out the trailer right here.
