DARK WATERS

Mark Ruffalo Won't Drink the Water

BY: Amanda Jane Stern

What would you say if I told you that a massive chemical company was poisoning our water, which was not only leading to the deaths of farm animals, but also health problems for the general public. And not only was this company getting away with this, but our government was basically in the pocket of this chemical company. Would you call me a conspiracy nut? What if I could prove it, would it still be just conspiracy? As crazy as it sounds, that hypothetical I posed is entirely true, and is the basis for the upcoming film Dark Waters.

Dark Waters stars Mark Ruffalo as Robert Bilott, a corporate attorney, who ends up taking on the case of a farmer from West Virginia who is convinced that the reason his cattle have been dying is because of poisoned water. Billot discovers that, not only have the farmer’s cattle been poisoned, but that the major chemical company DuPont is behind dumping chemical waste (and unregulated chemicals) into the water. Not only were livestock being affected, but it was leading to illnesses in the people too. Bilott, horrified by what he discovered, decided that he would not rest until he made DuPont pay for their actions, even if it meant taking them on and taking on the politicians in their pockets.

Dark Waters was directed by Todd Haynes, from a script written by Mario Correa and Matthew Michael Carnahan. In addition to Ruffalo, it stars Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Victor Garber, Mare Winningham, William Jackson Harper, and Bill Pullman.

Dark Waters is scheduled to be released on November 22, 2019 by Focus Features.
