David Fincher’s new biopic Mank follows sarcastic, alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he tries to finish the script for Citizen Kane. Along the way, he found himself at odds with the film’s director and star, Orson Welles. The movie, which is set in the 1930s, was shot entirely in black-and-white to keep with the theme of Hollywood’s Golden Era. Preliminary reviews for the film have been resoundingly positive. It is scheduled to have a limited theatrical release on November 13, 2020, before it drops on Netflix on December 4, 2020. Let’s take a look at some of the cast right now.
Gary Oldman
Who he’s playing: Herman J. Mankiewicz, a Hollywood screenwriter who wrote Citizen Kane with Orson Welles.
How you know him: His Academy Award-winning performance in Darkest Hour, as well as his Academy Award-nominated performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Or, if you’re more into fantasy films, his role as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter films, or Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Amanda Seyfried
Who she’s playing: Marion Davies, an actress and the mistress of William Randolph Hearst (on whom the character of Charles Foster Kane is based). Do yourself a favor and look up what “rosebud” really meant.
How you know her: Her breakout performance as Karen in Mean Girls, as well as her role as Sophie in Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Fans of the feminist horror cult classic Jennifer’s Body will also recognize her as Jennifer’s best friend Needy.
Charles Dance
Who he’s playing: William Randolph Hearst, the influential American businessman, newspaper publisher, and politician who founded Hearst Communications. Hearst was so angered by Citizen Kane, and although he never saw the film, he tried to stop its release.
How you know him: Fans of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones will recognize him as Tywin Lannister, the cunning patriarch of the Lannister family. Fans will also recognize him from his Screen Actors Guild Award-winning performance in Gosford Park.
Lily Collins
Who she’s playing: Rita Alexander, Herman J. Mankiewicz’s secretary.
How you know her: She most recently starred as Emily in Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris. You will also recognize her from Love, Rosie, Rules Don’t Apply, and To The Bone.
Tom Burke
Who he’s playing: Orson Welles, the American actor, writer, director, and producer who is one of the most influential filmmakers in American cinematic history.
How you know him: His role as Anthony in the independent film The Souvenir and his role as Billy in Only God Forgives.
Arliss Howard
Who he’s playing: Louis B Mayer, the film producer and co-founder of MGM.
