Eddie Murphy is back in the upcoming biographical comedy Dolemite is My Name. The film details the life of Rudy Ray Moore. Rudy Ray Moore was a jack-of-all-trades when it came to entertaining people; he was a filmmaker, a comic, a rapper, you name it. But what he wasn’t, was successful, at least not as successful as he wanted to be, that is until he came up with the character of Dolemite.

Dolemite was a character created by Moore that he used in his stand-up routine and in a series of blaxpoitation films that started with Dolemite in 1975. The character of Dolemite was inspired by the legend of an urban hero that Moore heard from a homeless man. Dolemite was a foul-mouthed, nightclub-owning pimp with a posse of kung-fu fighting prostitutes at his side. With the character of Dolemite, Moore achieved the kind of success he was aiming for, and now, he even gets his own biopic.

Dolemite is My Name was directed by Craig Brewer and written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. In addition to Murphy, it stars Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Wesley Snipes, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Chris Rock. Yes, that is an insane cast. It had its world premiere on September 7, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Dolemite is My Name will get a limited theatrical release on October 4, 2019 before it starts streaming on Netflix on October 25, 2019.
