DUNE’s CAST ON SET

A 3-minute trailer dropped for Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. The sci-fi epic, adapted into a much-maligned 1980s film by David Lynch, follows a young nobleman who must protect the galaxy’s most valuable asset: the spice. The spice is a drug that extends human life and provides super-human abilities. The trailer promises us a sweeping epic fantasy, with just a dash of atmospheric moodiness. While we will not get to see Dune until December 18, 2020, let’s take a look at who is in the cast.
Timothée Chalamet
Who he’s playing: Paul Atreides. Paul is the son of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica. After his family is betrayed, it is up to him to travel to the most dangerous planet in the galaxy to ensure his family and his peoples’ survival.
Where you know him from: his Academy Award-nominated performance in Call Me By Your Name, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Little Women.
Rebecca Ferguson
Who she’s playing: Lady Jessica, a concubine of Duke Leto and Paul’s mother. She and her son flee deep into the desert of the planet Arrakis to seek shelter with the Fremen.
Where you know her from: as Ilsa Faust in the Mission Impossible franchise, her Golden Globe nominated performance in The White Queen, and The Greatest Showman.
Oscar Isaac
Who he’s playing: Duke Leto Atreides, Paul’s father. He is given stewardship of the planet Arrakis in order to mine the spice. Although he knows the position is actually a trap set by his enemies, he takes the job.
Where you know him from: His Golden Globe winning performance in the miniseries Show Me a Hero, his role as Poe Dameron in the recent Star Wars trilogy, and Ex Machina.
Zendaya
Who she’s playing: Chani, not much is known about who Chani is. What we do know is that she is a mysterious young woman who is also a Fremen. From what we can gather, it seems she will become an ally and love interest to Paul.
Where you know her from: her performance as Rue in Euphoria, playing Michelle in the new Spider-Man movies, and The Greatest Showman.
Josh Brolin
Who he’s playing: Gurney Halleck. As weapons master to the Atreides’, Gurney is a trusted advisor. He also acts as Paul’s mentor and helps him become the hero he needs to be.
Where you know him from: his Academy Award-nominated performance in Milk, playing Thanos in the Avengers films, and No Country for Old Men.
Stellan Skarsgård
He’s playing: Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the movie’s villain and sworn enemy to Leto. While he pretends to be upset at losing Arrakis’s stewardship to Leto, he plans to use it to destroy the Atreides family.
You know him from: his Golden Globe-winning performance in Chernobyl, as Bill Anderson in the Mamma Mia movies, and as Erik Selvig in the Thor and Avengers films.
Jason Momoa
Who he’s playing: Duncan Idaho. Like Gurney Halleck, Duncan Idaho is a mentor to Paul, who helps him on his hero’s journey. He is the swordmaster for the Atreides’.
You know him from: as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, and as Aquaman in Aquaman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League.
Javier Bardem
Who he’s playing: Stilgar, a native of the planet Arrakis and leader of the Fremen. he and his tribe take in Paul and Lady Jessica after Baron Harkonnen’s men attack their family.
Where you know him from: his terrifying Academy Award-winning performance in No Country for Old Men, and his Academy Award-nominated performances in Before Night Falls and Biutiful.
