From the Land of the Moon

A passionate affair set in post-WW2 France

Based on the international best-selling novel by Milena Agus, and starring Academy Award-winner Marion Cotillard, From the Land of the Moon tells the story of a free-spirited woman who longs for true love in a time when that notion is just…well….the silly dream of a free-spirited woman. Set at the end of the World War II, when the notion of marrying for love was unheard of, the best that Gabrielle (Cotillard) can hope for is a marriage of convenience, which her parents arrange with José, a local farm worker who is devoted to her. Once married, she is constantly sick, and is eventually sent to a spa to recover. There she crosses paths with a wounded war veteran with whom she begins a passionate affair. As the time approaches for her release and reality sets it, it’s not so much a question of whether she will follow her dreams…but which is the dream she should follow.

Once again Cotillard delivers a transcendent performance, this time under the direction of Nicole Garcia (who also wrote the screenplay). Shown in competition at last years Cannes Film Festial and nominated for 8 Césars (that’s French for Oscar) including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.
