JD WASHINGTON + ALICIA VIKANDER
The Movie Duo We Needed in Beckett

If you’ve ever felt like you needed a vacation after your vacation, hopefully, it’s not for the same reason as John David Washington’s character Beckett. In this upcoming Netflix thriller of the same name, Washington is on a getaway in Greece with his girlfriend April (Alicia Vikander) when they inadvertently become international fugitives.

Quickly, the couple finds themselves on the run in rural Greece, desperately trying to make it to the American embassy in Athens. Washington will put the “run” in “man on a run” as he scurries across Grecian cliffsides and races down Athenian alleyways.
Although if you were running for your life across the Greek countryside, you could do worse than as the third wheel alongside Washington and Vikander. While it’s a shame that they don’t have time to stop and appreciate the beauty of the olive trees and vineyards, at least audiences will enjoy the beauty of the couple hiking through the romantic farms and ancient ruins.

During their journey through the idyllic pastoral, Washington and Vikander get help from political activist Lena (actress Vicky Krieps of Phantom Thread). Actor Boyd Holbrook (of Logan and the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Sandman) is another supporting player in the role of Tynan.
This thriller is helmed by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, an Italian director and screenwriter. Cito Filomarino was a second unit director on films directed by his former partner Luca Guadagnino, including Call Me by Your Name and Suspiria. His previous feature film Antonia was about the life of poet Antonia Pozzi, and his short film Diarchy (starring Louis Garrel), played at Sundance. Directing is a family business for Cito Filomarino. He is the great-nephew of Italian neorealism theater and film director Luchino Visconti (behind such classics as Ossessione, The Damned, and Death in Venice).
The film was initially called Born to Be Murdered, but it changed when Netflix acquired it.
Beckett will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning on August 13th, 2021.
