John David Washington wowed us with his performance as Ron Stallworth, an African-American detective who infiltrated the KKK, in Spike Lee‘s biographical drama BlacKkKlansman, but let’s take a moment to get to know him. Born July 28, 1984, to parents Pauletta Washington and Denzel Washington (yes, THAT Denzel), Washington got his first taste of acting at the age of seven when he appeared as a student in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. However, this role did not set him on a path to full-time acting. At first, Washington wanted to be a pro football player. He played college ball at Morehouse College before signing on as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Rams. Washington’s next stop was the Sacramento Mountain Lions. He continued to play football until 2012 when the league folded.

In 2015 Washington returned to acting as a series regular opposite Dwayne Johnson on HBO’s Ballers. He stayed with the show until it ended after season 5 in 2019. During his time on Ballers, Washington also starred in BlacKkKlansman, as mentioned earlier, plus he had a supporting role in David Lowery’s The Old Man & The Gun. Now that Ballers is over, Washington is keeping busy with new projects. The most exciting is the upcoming Christopher Nolan film, Tenet. In short, Tenet is about a secret agent known only as The Protagonist (Washington), tasked with preventing World War III. Any fan of Nolan’s previous film, Inception, will be quick to point out that Tenet looks even more confusing.

A new trailer was just released and It reveals that Tenet is not a name, but a code word, that can open both good and bad doors. What any of that means, remains to be seen. In addition to Washington, it stars Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Himesh Patel, Martin Donovan and Kenneth Branagh.

See Tenet on IMAX starting July 17, 2020 and watch the new trailer here right now.
