Emilia Clarke + Henry Golding
Starring In George Michael's Last Christmas

Emilia Clarke’s latest project exchanges dragons and the Seven Kingdoms of Game of Thrones for an elf costume and a Christmas-themed store, Yuletide, in the film, Last Christmas. It’s no coincidence it shares a title with George Michael’s iconic 1986 song, “Last Christmas,” it was the film’s inspiration. Last Christmas follows Kate (Clarke), a perpetually unlucky young woman. Kate has a penchant for drinking (at least according to her mother, Adelia, played by the inimitable Emma Thompson), and takes a job as a holiday elf in a store owned by Santa (Michelle Yeoh). Kate’s life improves when Tom (Henry Golding) shows up and gives her a new lease on life.
Not much else is known about the plot, but many who’ve seen the trailer think the film isn’t as festive as it first seems. The trailer reveals that Kate’s cynicism is because last Christmas she almost died. Astute viewers believe that, in the trailer, only Kate seems to interact with Tom. While Paul Feig, the director, says it’s a rom-com and he would never make a movie to upset people. But that hasn’t stopped viewers from theorizing about the film’s possible twists.
One of the more interesting theories comes directly from the George Michael song after which this film is named. Specifically, that Tom (Golding) is the ghost of Kate’s (Clarke) organ donor. After all, the opening line of the song is “last Christmas, I gave you my heart.” Kate tells us in the trailer that last year she was very sick. Perhaps, she had to have a heart transplant and ended up getting Tom’s heart? This Christmas, has his spirit come to help her move on with her life? Is that theory too dark for a supposed rom-com?
Do you have any crazy theories about this film? The only way to find out, for sure, is to see Last Christmas when it’s released. It will be in theaters on November 8, 2019.
