Who isn’t familiar with the ultra-talented Kate Winslet? She’s been wowing us with her multi-layered performances since the mid-90s when she played Juliet Hulme in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures. Based on a true story, the psychological thriller tracked the codependent relationship between teen girls Juliet and Pauline Parker (Melanie Lynskey), that eventually culminated in murder. Since her breakout performance, Winslet has continued to impress with all of her work.

After the success of Heavenly Creatures, Winslet went on to be cast in a slew of other films, including the Ang Lee adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, starring Emma Thompson, and as Ophelia in Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet. Superstardom came knocking when Winslet was cast as Rose DeWitt Bukater in James Cameron’s Titanic. You know, that little movie about the ill-fated ship that went on to become the highest-grossing-film of all time (it was unseated in 2009 by James Cameron’s Avatar). Won 11 Academy Awards, and earned Winslet a nomination for Best Actress. Yeah, that movie.

Winslet’s star-power has only continued to grow. And now, she has a new film coming soon that we’re excited for. Winslet has teamed up with Francis Lee (God’s Own Country) for his sophomore feature film: Ammonite. Set in the 1840s, this romantic drama follows real-life palaeontologist, Mary Anning (Winslet). With her glory days behind her, she spends her time hunting for fossils to sell to rich tourists on the English Coast. One day, the wealthy Roderick Murchison (James McArdle) hires her to act as a companion to his grieving wife Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan). As the women spend time together and Mary teaches Charlotte about her work, they find themselves falling in love.

Ammonite will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2020. A trailer for the movie is now out. In it, we see things heat up between the leading women. Lee’s first film, God’s Own Country, was a bleak yet beautiful film that followed the romance between young Yorkshire farmer Johnny (Josh O’Connor) and Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu). Ammonite looks like it will have a similar vibe. Ammonite is scheduled for release on November 13, 2020.
