Just because the current pandemic put the entire film industry mostly on hold, doesn’t mean people haven’t been finding ways to create content. A group of celebrities has virtually created a fan-film remake of The Princess Bride for Quibi. It’s a goofy retelling of the beloved classic, with each role played by multiple actors. Suffice it to say, it’s a fun watch, but it’s not going to be any awards contender. Enter Malcolm & Marie, a new movie shot during lockdown starring Zendaya and John David Washington.

Malcolm & Marie filmed between June 17 and July 2 at the eco-friendly Caterpillar House in Carmel, CA. Most plot details haven’t been revealed, but preliminary reports indicate that the two-person movie echoes last year’s Marriage Story and reflects current social themes. It was written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. According to Deadline, after  Euphoria’s season two was postponed, Zendaya reached out to Levinson and asked if he could create a movie shot entirely during the quarantine. Additionally, she helped raise funds, including investing her own money into the project. Filming was done in full compliance with WGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA safety regulations.

There was a maximum number of twelve people allowed on set on any given day. Crew members doubled up positions and the actors handled their own microphones and costumes. Additionally, everyone involved lived together at Caterpillar House for the two weeks to ensure no outside pandemic exposure.

Right now, the film is finished but no trailer or release date is known. Zendaya recently shared a still image of herself and Washington (who co-executive produced with her), from the movie. Based on the photo and the few details we have, it is a good bet that the two play a couple. Hopefully, we will soon learn more about this secretive project.
