In Tom McCarthy’s upcoming crime drama Stillwater, Matt Damon plays an oil worker from Stillwater, Oklahoma named Bill Baker. When he learns that his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin), has been arrested in France for the murder of her girlfriend, which she did not commit, he packs up his life and moves to France.

Unfortunately, Allison has already exhausted all of her legal options, and Bill finds he must do whatever it takes to clear his daughter’s name for a murder she did not commit. As he struggles to get her freed, he finds help in French woman Virginie (Camille Cottin). The plotline definitely gives off Amanda Knox vibes.

A trailer was just released for the film. Focus Features, which is releasing the film, described it as “a dramatic thriller directed by Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy and starring Matt Damon, Stillwater follows an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter, in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit.
