One of the next original movies to hit Netflix this year will be Tick, Tick… Boom! The film is based on the musical about Jonathan Larson, the playwright who created Rent. It was initially announced in 2018 as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut. A year later, Netflix acquired the film and selected Andrew Garfield for the role of Jonathan Larson.

Like most films produced during the pandemic, Tick, Tick… Boom! faced a delay. Filming was idled from April 2020 to October 2020. But, a month later, filming was completed.

Besides Andrew Garfield, Tick, Tick… Boom! stars Alexandra Shipp, Vanessa Hudgens, Jordan Fisher, and Robin de Jesús. Its plot follows Jonathan Larson in 1980s New York as he struggled with a mid-life crisis as he approached age 30. He’s stuck in a dead-end job, his friends are dying of AIDS, and he doesn’t think he will achieve his dream of becoming a Broadway playwright.

It’s hard to tell how much of the film will be musical but since it’s about Broadway, we expect plenty of singing. You can catch Tick, Tick… Boom! on Netflix when it is released on November 12.
