Ocean’s 8, Simply Great

Danny Ocean may have pulled his last heist, but the journey continues.

Steven Soderbergh‘s landmark Ocean’s 11 (and its sequels, Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13) is heralded as the epitome of “cool.” There’s simply no other word to describe one of the greatest heist movies of all time, in which George Clooney and his crew of thieves (including Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Bernie Mac, Carl Reiner, and more) put their heads together and decide to ruin Andy Garcia‘s day by robbing his Las Vegas casinos.

Although the series was put to rest with 2007’s Ocean’s 13, the franchise is being revived with Ocean’s 8, starring Sandra Bullock as Danny Ocean’s sister, Debbie. She’s planning to rob the Met Gala, stealing a necklace off the neck of Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) and throw some mud in the eye of the main villain, played by Damian Lewis – who just happens to be Debbie’s ex…but first, Debbie needs to assemble a crew. Enter Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulsen, and Awkwafina…including Sandra Bullock, that’s only seven. Perhaps an unexpected twist in the story will resolve that little discrepancy?

Original director Steven Soderbergh is serving as producer this time around, while Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Free State of Jones) is stepping in to direct. Based on the trailer, the premise is similar to the original, but with all female characters. Fortunately, unlike the ill-advised Ghostbusters remake of 2016, this new film is actually set within the continuity of the Soderbergh trilogy, with Carl Reiner and Matt Damon slated to reprise their roles from the original. Additionally, a brief moment in the trailer shows the supposed grave of Danny Ocean, but, considering George Clooney is producing the new film, we definitely wouldn’t rule out a Clooney cameo.

Ocean’s 8 is currently set for release on June 8, 2018.
