We know October is the month of terror and thrills, but it’s also a month to see many great new releases. And no, not all of the films that will be released this Halloween month are horror movies. Most are not about goblins and ghouls and things that go bump in the night. Let’s take a look at eight exciting new releases coming out this October.

The Guilty

In this Antoine Fuqua remake of the Danish film of the same name Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a troubled detective who gets demoted to 911 operator. After receiving a call from a person in distress, he must scramble to save the caller before it is too late. The Guilty drops on Netflix on October 1, 2021.

The Many Saints of Newark

This prequel to the HBO series The Sopranos follows a young Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini) as he moves up the ranks in a Newark, NJ crime family. The Many Saints of Newark will have its world premiere on September 22, 2021, at the Tribeca Film Festival before being released in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1, 2021.

Titane

Julia Ducournau’s follow-up to her terrifying debut Raw follows a woman who becomes pregnant after having sex with a car. This body horror flick premiered at Cannes on July 13, 2021, and went on to win the Palme d’Or, making Ducournau the second woman ever to win the award. Titane comes out October 1, 2021.

No Time to Die

No Time to Die finds a retired Bond dragged back into espionage by an old CIA friend. What sets this Bond film apart from the rest is that, for the first time, a woman (Lashana Lynch) takes on the 007 mantle. Even more exciting, Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote the script. No Time to Die hits the big screen on October 8, 2021.

The Last Duel

Ridley Scott’s new film is based on the 2004 book by medieval literature professor Eric Jager. Both the movie and book tell the story of the “duel to end all duels” between French Knight Jean de Carrouges and squire Jacques Le Gris over the honor of Marguerite de Carrouges. The Last Duel comes out on October 15, 2021.

The Velvet Underground

This documentary from Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine, Carol) follows the famous rock band The Velvet Underground. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes film festival on July 7, 2021. It was acquired by Apple TV+ and will be released theatrically and on the streaming platform on October 15, 2021.

Antlers

An Oregon school teacher (Keri Russell) teams up with her brother, the sheriff (Jesse Plemons), to get to the bottom of one of her students’ dark secrets. Of course, the king of fantastical horror himself, Guillermo del Toro, produced the film, so you know you’re in for a treat. Antlers is scheduled to come out on October 29, 2021.

Last Night in Soho

This new movie from Edgar Wright stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a young woman who finds herself mysteriously transported to London’s Soho neighborhood of the 1960s. There, she comes face to face with her idol, but she soon realizes that 1960s London is not all it seems, and something sinister is afoot. Last Night in Soho is scheduled to be released on October 29, 2021.
