We might not have any stripped-down stars in this year’s list of Academy Award Nominees, but in past years Oscar winners have shown plenty of skin. Oscar voters love to see all-out commitment before they hand over Hollywood’s most-coveted statue…and what could show more commitment than baring it all for your role? We’ve collected a few of our favorite Academy Award-winning nude scenes below:

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Gwyneth Paltrow
Nude Scene: Playing a woman who has an affair with William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) while he’s writing Romeo and Juliet, Paltrow goes topless while consummating their love.

 

Monster’s Ball (2001)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Halle Berry
Nude Scene: In her role as the wife of a convicted murderer and mother of a child killed in a car accident, Berry held nothing back in one of mainstream film’s most graphically raw sex scenes.

 

Jerry Maguire (1996)

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Winner: Cuba Gooding Jr.
Nude Scene: Gooding Jr. emerged from the locker room showers butt-naked in his role as  the loud-mouthed football player who demanded that his agent (Tom Cruise) “Show me the mon-ay!”

 

Klute (1971)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Jane Fonda
Nude Scene: She played a prostitute, so it was true-to-character for Fonda to shamelessly walk around topless.  

 

The English Patient (1996)

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner: Juliette Binoche
Nude Scene: As Hana, the nurse who takes care of a burned war vet (Ralph Fiennes), Binoche went au naturel for a sex scene.

 

The Piano (1993)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Holly Hunter
Nude Scene: Hunter played a mute 19th-century Scotswoman, Ada McGrath, who was sold into an arranged marriage with a menacing New Zealand man (Sam Neill). When her husband gives away her prized piano, a lecherous neighbor (Harvey Keitel) offers to get it back for her if she provides him with sexual favors.

 

The Reader (2008)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Kate Winslet
Nude Scene: There is no shortage of sex and nudity in this film in which Winslet plays a grown German woman with a secret Nazi-era past who teaches a virginal teenage boy the the joys of lovemaking.

 

Women in Love (1969)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Glenda Jackson
Nude Scene: This adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s erotic novel contains plenty of sexual couplings. The British actress credits being five months pregnant for the ampleness of her bare breasts.

 

Darling (1965)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Julie Christie
Nude Scene: Christie, who plays a free-spirited model, has a teary, clothes-ripping meltdown in her bedroom.  

 

Monster (2003)

Best Actress Oscar Winner: Charlize Theron
Nude Scene: Playing lesbian serial killer Aileen Wouros, Theron takes a shower to wash off the blood of a victim.
