Schrader’s THE CARD COUNTER
Intense Revenge Thriller + Oscar Buzz 4 Oscar Issac
The Card Counter, a crime drama from Focus Features, follows the life of an “ex-military interrogator turned gambler haunted by the ghosts of his past decisions.” Its trailer is fast-paced and exciting; sex, violence, and mayhem are all highlighted, and these exciting elements set us up for a story that’s mysterious and haunting. Martin Scorsese is the producer, and it stars Oscar Isaac as William Tell. Other actors include Willam Dafoe, Major John Gordo, Tiffany Haddish, and La Linda.
Paul Schrader is known for collaborating with Scorsese as a writer on several projects, such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and directing the film Affliction. In addition, Oscar Isaac played Nathan in Ex Machina and Poe in the new additions of the Star Wars franchise, VII-IX.
The preview alludes to difficult choices that the characters must make. It begins in a hotel room, where Isaac lays out a bed cloth while a voice-over says, “There is a weight a man can accrue.” The voice then says that the past burdens every man; it can swallow a man whole and disrupt his future forever.
Officials selected The Card Counter for the Venice Film Festival, and there is already Oscar buzz. Tye Sheridan also stars; his most notable role was Wade Watts in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Isaac’s aggressive performance in The Card Counter elevates his acting, helping separate Isaac and Sheridan’s characters.
Scorsese is renowned for producing thrillers with troubled male characters. With Scorsese’s masterful oversight, this film will likely shine, and the script will come alive. The Card Counter is expected to be released on September 10.
