If you’re looking for something beyond the usual Captain X-Men Vampire Mutant Ninjas this summer, check out these choices from PROVOKR that will pique your hearts and minds.

Alice Through the Looking Glass
Lewis Carroll, we hardly knew ye! Alice returns to Wonderland via the Looking Glass, some mind-altering cookies and Tim Burton’s warped imagination to save the Mad Hatter from the clutches of the surreal Queen of Hearts. With Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Johnny Depp as the Hatter, and Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen, not to mention Anne Hathaway and Sacha Baron Cohen.

The Ones Below
In this sophisticated British chiller, a young couple expecting their first child move into the top apartment of a duplex and become increasingly anxious about their downstairs neighbors. Starring Clémence Poésy (Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter series) and Stephen Campbell Moore as the couple, and David Morrissey and Laura Birn as the creepy ones below.

The Music of Strangers
This inspiring documentary features cellist Yo-Yo Ma and musicians from around the world as they come together to take part in the Silk Road Project and joyfully harmonize.

Our Little Sister
Three Japanese sisters, who have lived together in their grandmother’s home since their dad and then their mom abandoned them for new mates, discover they have a young half-sister at their errant father’s funeral and decide to take her in. From master cinematic story-teller Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son).

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie
They’re old, they’re drunk, and they’re as blithely self-centered as ever, but Edina (Jennifer Saunders, who wrote the screenplay) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) are back with a new and utterly doomed plan to conquer the current club scene. Joining them are Cara Delevingne, Rebel Wilson, Jon Hamm, Joan Collins, Chris Colfer, Barry Humphries, Perez Hilton, Jerry Hall, Kate Moss, Lulu, Stella McCartney, Jean-Paul Gauthier and Jane Horrocks as Bubble.

Indignation
Logan Lerman stars as a working-class Jewish kid from New Jersey in 1951 who attends a small conservative college in Ohio, falls for a mentally unbalanced girl (Sarah Gadon), and confronts the sexually repressed and anti-Semitic confines of his corner of academia. Based on the novel by Philip Roth; adapted and directed by James Schamus (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; The Ice Storm).

Into the Forest
Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood star as two women who cling to each other in an ancient forest in the not-too-distant future as the world teeters on the edge of apocalypse.

Southside With You
Coming to theaters August 26: In the summer of 1989, two young lawyers, Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) and Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter), began dating while they lived on the South Side of Chicago. The result will go down in history, and the story is truly a romance to remember.
