PROVOKR PICK: ANTEBELLUM
Janelle Monáe Must Escape the Past

In the brand new psychological horror film Antebellum, Janelle Monáe stars as Veronica Henley, a successful author. After a night out with friends, she calls for a car to take her home. However, instead of getting into that vehicle, she gets into another whose passengers have ulterior motives. They abduct Veronica and send her back to the antebellum era of the American south. Now trapped in the past, Veronica finds herself enslaved on a plantation. She must do everything in her power to not only figure out how she was transported back in time, but also how to return before it’s too late.
Antebellum marks the feature film debut of writing/directing duo Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz. The pair have co-written and co-directed several short films together prior to embarking on their first feature length project. The movie was produced by QC Entertainment, the production company behind Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, and is being distributed by Lionsgate. It was initially intended for a theatrical release on April 24, 2020. Due to the coronavirus, that release was pushed back to August 24, 2020. That was pushed back once again to a September VOD release in the states, with a theatrical release in select countries overseas.
In addition to Janelle Monáe, Antebellum has a talented cast that includes Eric Lange (Escape at Dannemora), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Jack Huston (Ben-Hur), Kiersey Clemons (Angie Tribeca), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), and Marque Richardson (Dear White People).
