ROVOKR PICK: BIRDS OF PREY
Margot Robbie's "Emancipated" Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is back in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). This time though, she has left the Joker behind and embraced her new singlehood. Instead of focusing on any romantic relationships, this new DC movie will focus on some bad-ass female friendships. Specifically, it will focus on the friendship between Harley Quinn, Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). These four kick-ass ladies team up to save a young girl (Ella Jay Basco) from the clutches of an evil crime lord named Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor.
What’s so exciting about this movie, other than it being a superhero film entirely about female superheroes? The movie was written by Christina Hodson and directed by Cathy Yan. Yeah, a superhero movie about women bringing down evil men, that was made by women. It’s sad that even in 2020, an idea like that is still so revolutionary, but here we are. And of course, with a team of women taking over Harley Quinn from a team of men, she gets a new costume design. Unlike her old look, this new costume will be less preoccupied with showcasing Harley Quinn’s physical assets, and more interested in how her clothes reflect her state of mind.
Aside from how exciting it is that we are finally seeing more and more superhero movies helmed by women, Birds of Prey also looks wild. Seriously, give the trailer a watch and then say you’re not excited for this movie. Harley Quinn looks like she’s finally gotten a movie worthy of her complex and fascinating character. And the cast looks like they’re having a blast. Who wouldn’t in a film this fun?
See Birds of Prey in theaters February 7, 2020.
