PROVOKR PICK: CHARLIE’S ANGELS
Elizabeth Banks and Kristen Stewart? Yes, Please!

2000 gave us the McG remake of the famous 1970s TV series, now 19 years later, there is a new big-screen adaptation of the cultural phenomenon that is Charlie’s Angels. Yes, there was a 2011 TV reboot, but we can ignore that low-rated project as it was cancelled after just 4 episodes. This time around, Elizabeth Banks is at the helm and she’s adjusted the tried and true formula. The film still revolves around 3 women who work as secret agents for the never-seen Charlie (voiced by Robert Clotworthy), but Bosley, the handler for the Angels will be played by multiple people, instead of just one. The 2003 sequel to the 2000 adaptation opened up this possibility when it replaced Bill Murray’s Bosley with Bernie Mac’s and Shia LaBeouf as a potential Bosley-in-training. Banks is the main Bosley (a female for the first time) as well as the film’s director.
Now, onto our Angels: Naomi Scott is Elena. She just played Jasmine in Disney’s live action remake of Aladdin. She becomes an Angel after uncovering a dangerous piece of technology. Scott is joined by relative newcomer Ella Balinska, as Jane, the brainy angel behind the operation. And Kristen Stewart is Sabina, the brawn of the organization. We, here at PROVOKR, are very excited to see Stewart play an Angel and the trailer shows her having a blast (both literally and figuratively), remember it’s an A-C-T-I-O-N movie!
Fans of the 2000 version may have noticed the homoerotic undertones of it and that Drew Barrymore’s character, Dylan, definitely seemed queer. But in 2000, LGBT characters were not as prevalent as today. In 2019, we still wonder, will Stewart’s Sabina be queer as we think and hope she’ll be? The trailer certainly hints so, but only seeing the film will tell.
Charlie’s Angels comes out November 15, 2019.
