PROVOKR Pick: Dark Phoenix
A Super Film With a Superstar Cast
PROVOKR’s pick for must-see film of the moment is the new X-Men feature, Dark Phoenix. With an all-star cast that features Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and the incredibly hunky Michael Fassbender reprising their respective superhero roles, Dark Phoenix is a draw for devoted fans as well as those new to the action/sci-fi franchise. The film also boasts one of our favorite redheads, Jessica Chastain—as a platinum blonde—in a starring role.
Turner (of Game of Thrones fame) plays Jean Grey and, upon being struck by a cosmic force in outer space, is turned into something incredibly powerful. This is the catalyst that gets the story moving into a direction dealing with uncontrollable and, most of all, uncertain power. If you’re a fan of the X-Men films or simply of action and science fiction, this should not disappoint. With Turner’s skin filled with what looks like streaks of fire and lightning, her character becomes something to be feared. In the film’s trailer she can be heard uttering: “When I lose control bad things happen to people I love.” We’ll just have to see exactly what happens but, from what we’ve been teased with, it looks like it’s going to be filled with randomly firing machine guns, adventures in space, clashes of unwieldy power and very beautiful people/mutants.
