PROVOKR Pick: Hustlers
They'll Strip You of Your Money
As you may recall, we covered this film when the trailer dropped, but now it’s finally here, a new kind of steal from the rich story (isn’t that everyone’s fantasy?) Hustlers follows a group of strippers who turn the tables on their wealthy Wall Street clients. The film, written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, was inspired by the 2015 New York Magazine article “The Hustlers at Scores,” about a group of strippers who swindled their clients out of loads of money. One of the real-life strippers actually sued the film for using her story without her express permission, oops. I can’t seem to find how that lawsuit concluded, but the woman who brought the suit, Samantha Barbash, is coming out with her own tell-all book.
The film boasts an impressive cast of A-list talent led by Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu, and including Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B. Reviews of the film have so far been positive, and Lopez’s performance as the ringleader of the group being praised. Honestly, this movie just looks wild, and knowing that it is based on a true story, however loosely (truth is often stranger than fiction I have found), makes me even more excited to see it.
So slip into your stilettos, come on, you know you want to dress up at least a little when you go see this film, it’ll be part of the fun. Just maybe leave the stripper costume at home, I’m not sure your fellow movie theater patrons will appreciate that. And get yourself to the theater for what is sure to be a wild ride.
Hustlers comes out in theaters this Friday, September 13, 2019.
