In Josh Boone’s (The Fault in Our Stars) new spin-off of the X-Men franchise, The New Mutants, five young mutants discover their powers and fight to escape a secret facility. Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) stars in the movie as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane: a Scottish girl from a strict religious upbringing who is discovering her powers and sexuality. She falls in love with fellow mutant Danielle Moonstar/Mirage (Blu Hunt): a Native American illusionist. The other characters are Ilyana Rasputin/Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), a Russian sorceress with transport powers; Sam Guthrie/Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), an American teen who can propel himself into the air; and Roberto da Costa/Sunspot (Henry Zaga), a Brazilian teen who manipulates solar energy.

Boone initially intended The New Mutants to be the first film in a trilogy. He said that that now looks unlikely due to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which produced the film. Boone has also described the movie as not just a supernatural horror movie, but also a character drama with a strong focus on an LGBTQ+ romance between Wolfsbane and Mirage.

The New Mutants release date has been delayed numerous times. It was initially supposed to be released April 13, 2018, then moved to a February 22, 2019 release to avoid going up against Deadpool 2. Then, it was pushed back to August 2, 2019, to avoid Dark Phoenix. After Disney acquired Fox, the release was delayed again until April 3, 2020. Finally, due to the coronavirus, it was pulled from April and moved again.
