Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is back in a sequel to the groundbreaking 2017 Wonder Woman movie. Wonder Woman 1984 is set in, yes, 1984, a significant change from the first picture’s World War I setting. The sequel sees our titular heroine face two new villains, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and the Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), who has superhuman strength and agility. But, Wonder Woman will not be alone in her fight against these new foes; she will be joined once again by Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).

You may remember that Steve Trevor sacrificed himself at the end of the first film by blowing himself up on a plane full of deadly poison. If you’re like us, you’re probably wondering how he’s back. And more than that, from the trailers, it’s clear that Trevor hasn’t aged a day, yet it’s been decades since WWI. So how is he back? Is Trevor a ghost? If so, that would explain why he hasn’t aged a day. Has he somehow been resurrected? And, if yes, by whom?

Given that one of Wonder Woman’s prime enemies in the first movie was the god of war, Ares, we do know that gods and goddesses are real in this universe. Which god or goddess brought him back and why? Or, is it more similar to what happened to Captain America? While detonating the bomb, did Trevor somehow end up submerged in ice and preserved all these years? Whatever the answer, we can’t wait to find out.

Patty Jenkins, who directed the first film, returned to helm the sequel as well. This time she also helped write the script along with Geoff Johns and David Callaham. Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, and Lilly Aspell also reprise their roles from the first film.

Wonder Woman 1984 comes out simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, 2020.
