Rebel in the Rye

A fascinating bio-pic about J.D. Salinger

BY: Claire Connors

In his later, post-The Catcher in the Rye years, J.D. Salinger religiously avoided the limelight, becoming a hermit in the woods of New Hampshire and the Big-Foot of the publishing world, with fuzzy photographs of the famous recluse appearing in newspapers and magazines whenever he stepped outside of his home. His refusal to sell the film rights to Holden Caulfield’s story—apparently he thought movies were phoney—only fueled the fires of fascination for the writer. Which is why Salinger would be mortified by Rebel In the Rye if he were alive today—hell, he’d probably sue someone–and why we can’t wait to see it.

Based on the true, but relatively unknown story of the young Jerome David Salinger’s college years and his harrowing WWII experience, the film stars the remarkable Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, X-Men, Warm Bodies) as the struggling writer on the verge of discovering his voice. Academy Award-winner Kevin Spacey plays the inspiring Whit Burnett, Jerry’s mentor and the editor of the highly respected magazine, Story, and Zoey Deutch beguiles as J.D.’s first love, Oona O’Neill, Eugene O’Neill’s daughter and future wife of Charlie Chaplin.

Rebel in the Rye debuted at the Sundance Film Festival 2017 and opens on September 15th.
