Song to Song

Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara directed by Terrence Malick

Terrence Malick has finally released the trailer for his newest auteur effort, Song to Song, and it looks like it was well worth the wait. In this all-star love story set against the Austin indie music scene, Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara portray a pair of indie rockers who fall in love, only to have Michael Fassbender’s music mogul character and Natalie Portman, a local waitress, throw their romance into an entangled mess of seduction and betrayal. The intrigue is all set against a backdrop of on-point hipster cool.

Malick spends years editing and perfecting his work, and Song to Song is no exception. Filming began in 2011-2012 and he’s been revising the final cut ever since. A host of famous faces are rumored to be in the mix, but no one is sure who remains after Malick’s extensive reshaping of the story. Among the four-star actors originally included: Christian Bale, Benicio Del Toro, Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer and Haley Bennett. We’ll have to wait for the movie’s release to see who remains.

Song to Song’s indie music plot demands a few cool cameos and Malick delivers those as well. Watch for Iggy Pop and Flea in the trailer, and hope that all of the following musicians who shot scenes will also appear in the finished film: Arcade Fire, Patti Smith, John Lydon, Florence & the Machine, Lykke Li and Iron & Wine. Of course the trailer features a fantastic soundtrack, too—“Runaway” by Del Shannon.

Song to Song will premiere at SXSW before its general release on March 17. You can watch the trailer above.
